Encouraging Learning Beyond Boundaries

The Article 51A(h) of the Constitution of India enjoins every citizen to develop scientific temper, humanism, and the spirit of inquiry and reform. This constitutional mandate forms the foundation of science communication efforts in the country. In alignment with this vision, the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM) was established as an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Through its nationwide network of science centres and outreach initiatives, NCSM plays a pivotal role in fostering scientific temper, promoting rational thinking, and strengthening public engagement with science. As a constituent unit of NCSM, Kurukshetra Panorama & Science Centre is being repositioned with a broader mandate—where science communication goes beyond dissemination to engagement, interpretation, and societal relevance. Situated in the historically significant landscape of Kurukshetra, the Centre carries a dual responsibility: to contextualize scientific thought within civilizational narratives, and to make science accessible, inquiry-driven, and meaningful for diverse audiences. Our current direction is anchored in developing a comprehensive science engagement ecosystem. The Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) extends the reach of the Centre beyond its campus, taking science directly to schools and communities. Structured capacity-building initiatives such as the Teacher’s Training Programme (TTP) aim to empower educators with effective tools for science communication, while programmes like the Summer Hobby Camp

nurture curiosity and creativity among young learners. The Centre also provides a strong platform for schools and colleges through the organization of Science Fairs, encouraging innovation, experimentation, and scientific thinking among students. In addition, observance of key national and international days—such as National Science Day, National Technology Day, Earth Day, World Environment Day, World Ozone Day, and World AIDS Day—is undertaken in a structured manner to connect scientific understanding with real-world challenges and societal awareness.

The Centre is steadily strengthening its experiential and environmental learning infrastructure through a series of strategic additions. The Science Park has been enriched with thematic outdoor learning spaces, including the Cactus Park (5 June 2023) and Butterfly Park (6 March 2024), aimed at promoting ecological awareness and biodiversity education. Further expanding this initiative, the Pond Ecosystem was unveiled on 22 March 2025, providing a live demonstration of aquatic ecology and environmental balance. Visitor-centric amenities have also been enhanced with the opening of a dedicated cafeteria facility on 7 September 2025, contributing to a more inclusive and comfortable public experience.

On the technological front, the Knowledge on Sphere (KOS) facility, inaugurated on 4 December 2025 as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, represents a significant advancement in data-driven visualization of earth and space science phenomena. Building on this momentum, the “Simulator (Fantasy Ride)” facility, inaugurated on 6 March 2026 during the Silver Jubilee year marking 25 years of Kurukshetra Panorama & Science Centre, has been conceived as a flagship addition, offering immersive and experience-driven learning environments.

Complementing these initiatives, the 3D film on the Mahabharata integrates history, culture, and technology into a cohesive interpretive experience, while the upcoming VR Theatre marks a significant step towards adopting emerging technologies to further transform visitor engagement. Recognizing that meaningful public engagement also depends on visitor comfort and accessibility, continuous efforts are being made to strengthen infrastructure and services, ensuring that the Centre functions as a complete and inclusive public space.

As science increasingly shapes public policy, environment, health, and technology, institutions like ours must contribute to building an informed and scientifically aware society. This requires not only infrastructure and technology, but also sustained commitment to relevance, interdisciplinary thinking, and collaborative outreach. The path ahead is clear: to position Kurukshetra Panorama & Science Centre as a forward-looking, socially responsive, and intellectually vibrant institution—one that encourages people not just to learn science, but to think scientifically.
